| Popular Names (U.S. Code) The United States Code has a useful
finding aid for Public Laws called the "Acts Cited
by Popular Name." In print, this resource is located
after Title 50. The Acts are listed alphabetically and
the Statutes at Large citation is given after each one as
well as the date that the Act became law which allows you
to find the full text of the law. Further information
that is provided with some, but not all of the Acts, is
the Public Law number and a U.S. Code citation if an
entry is classified mainly to a discrete part of the Code
such as a chapter or subchapter.
Electronically, Westlaw has a
database called USCA Popular Name Table (USCA-POP).
You can also access the Popular Name Table when you go
through the "Table of Contents" tab, then the
"United States Code Annotated" tab, then the
"Popular Name Table" tab. Westlaw provides an
alphabetical index of the Acts. Once you select an Act,
the Public Law number is provided along with the date it
was approved and links to the sections where it is
codified.
A free online source is the U.S.
Code Table of Popular Names through Cornell Law School's
Legal Information Institute. For some of the Popular
Names, LII has linked it to the Public Law through Thomas
as well as to the relevant section of the U.S. Code.
However, LII has not done this for all of the Acts. The
entries are listed alphabetically.
